Five ways to focus better when you work outside the office

Working outside the office means gaining freedom — but often losing focus. A changing environment, interruptions, no set framework: distractions multiply. Here are five methods to stay productive wherever you are.
1. Choose the place before the task
Not every task needs the same environment. Book a quiet space for deep work, and keep cafés for emails and short calls. Choosing the right place is already half the work of focusing.
2. Work in blocks
Split your day into 60 to 90-minute blocks dedicated to a single task, separated by real breaks. This structure protects you from constant switching, especially tempting when no one is looking over your shoulder.
3. Cut notifications
The first thief of focus sits in your pocket. Turn on "do not disturb" during your work blocks: you will check your messages between them, not during.
4. Recreate landmarks
The brain loves rituals. Even when changing places, keep some constants: same playlist, same first task of the morning, same way of setting up your spot. These landmarks tell your brain it is time to work.
5. Separate the moments
When the office has no more walls, it is up to you to draw the boundaries. Decide on a start and an end to the day, and a place dedicated to work — a space booked by the day helps make that break tangible.
In short
Focusing outside the office is not improvised: it is built. Choose the place by the task, work in blocks, cut notifications, keep rituals and draw clear boundaries. The freedom of the nomad comes at the price of a little discipline — well worth it.
